Companies in danger: Should we force ourselves to buy Made in France?

There are many challenges for local French brands, which are faced with prices that are often higher than those of their international competitors.

Made In France is highly appreciated by French consumers. According to a 2023 OpinionWay survey, 85% of French people say they regularly consume locally made products , with a marked preference for food products, followed by hygiene products and textiles.

Despite this appetite for national products, companies are struggling to survive. The famous brand Le Slip Français had to halve its prices to avoid bankruptcy…

Inflation dampens consumer needs

Inflation over the last two years has had a significant impact on purchases of Made In France products. Around 67% of respondents say that these price increases have directly influenced their ability to buy local products. Even though 89% of French people want to consume more national products, costs remain a major obstacle. Purchasing criteria show that price remains THE determining factor, with product quality in second place (composition, packaging), relegating the origin of the product to fourth place.

The future of French textiles: towards a more responsible consumption model?

Made In France : what solutions to revitalize the market?

To encourage the purchase of Made In France products , several levers can be considered. Relocating production is a priority for 83% of French people, but manufacturing costs in France remain high. Reducing production taxes or taxing imported products are avenues, but these measures are costly and sometimes complex to implement on a European scale.

Towards the disappearance of French companies in the face of fast fashion?

The textile sector is particularly affected. Fast fashion and ultra fast fashion have disrupted the market, making it difficult for French companies to compete.

Made In France : a challenge to take up, together!

Websites like Shein, which launch 8,000 new clothing references per day, illustrate this dynamic. To save our textile companies, it would be necessary to adopt an approach where we buy less, but better, by accepting higher prices for higher quality products. As consumers, we have a role to play. Favoring local products, even if they are more expensive, can help support our companies. However, this approach must be supported by an appropriate economic policy. For example, the alignment of production standards and the promotion of local purchasing in public procurement can make a significant difference.

The real challenge for our textile companies lies in the fierce competition from fast fashion. To face it, we must promote responsible and local consumption, while supporting policies that reduce production costs in France. It is a delicate balance, but essential to maintain our competitiveness.
